Sweden-born, acclaimed pop artist Emmanuelle June taps into a bleak and soulful dark night of the soul in INTERSTELLAR. A cry for completion and freedom, INTERSTELLAR takes the form of five-plus minutes of a poem written by Emmanuelle, sung from the depths of despair and hope.
The song is written by Emmanuelle, produced and mixed by Chris Kaz, and mastered by Oli Morgan at Abbey Road Studios. Artist Robert Mack (“Not Guilty By Reason of Insanity”) directs the music video alongside Emmanuelle June.
The collaboration plays on the theme of escapism masquerading as sensuality and the quest for self-salvation. In Emmanuelle June’s own words:
I saw it fitting to draw parallels between my lyrics claiming that ‘Smoke machines and disco dreams, nothing’s what it seems we are wounded’ and also ‘Freedom can’t be stolen - only blindfolded, free yourself - bask in your glory, have soul have soul tell our story.’ I wanted to create a visual story where boundaries and storyline are confusing and subtly tell the story of a character liberating herself from bondage. I wanted to base the video around a woman perceived as some sensual ‘belle du jour’ character. Still, as seen in the video, when zooming out, more details of the room are revealed, and it looks like a cell rather than what you’d assume to be a fancy hotel room. In the video, I wanted the character to free herself. I did not want to show a female character exploited, violated, and suffering (there are far too many such visuals, and society seems to seriously get off on such exploitation of the female body rather than being a vehicle for a change). I want the unseen and unspoken to shine through - I want the subtle to speak.
